Solar Photovoltaic System

Realising the tremendous potential of Solar Power as a Non-Conventional Energy Source, BHEL-Electronics Division started manufacturing Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) Cells and Modules besides developing complete SPV Systems. Ultra-modern facilities  have been set up for manufacture of cells and modules.

The SPV systems are specifically designed keeping in mind the necessity for unattended operation and ease in maintenance. Some of the major systems in operation are SPV Power Plants (Stand Alone and Grid Interactive), Solar Power Systems for Rural Radio Phones, Telecommunications, Railway Signaling and other applications.

BHEL has the competence to undertake site surveys, detailed designing, manufacture, supply and commissioning of complete application specific PV Systems. The PV modules manufactured by BHEL have been certified to International Standards (CEI/IEC 61215) by JRC, ESTI, Italy.

Photovoltaic Modules

BHEL offers a wide range of the-state-of-the-art solar Photovoltaic modules suitable for a variety of applications. These modules are suitable for 12V / 24V battery charging and by connecting these modules in series / parallel combinations, power generation to suit the specific application can be achieved. Photovoltaic modules are finding increased use in the applications including Solar lanterns, Solar street light system, Village electrification, Water pumping, Railway signaling and lighting system, Microwave repeater stations, Navigational aids, Offshore platforms, Rural radio phones and exchanges, Desalination plants, Cathodic protection systems, Domestic appliances, Battery charging, Solar traffic signals, Solar refrigeration, Centralized power plants, Grid interactive system, Hybrid systems.

These modules generate electricity directly from sunlight using mono-crystalline/poly-crystalline silicon solar cells laminated in EVA (Ethyl Vinyl Acetate) and a high transmission toughened glass as a superstrate.

BHEL offers various types of PV modules ranging from 10 to 240 WP .

Main features of Photovoltaic Modules:

  • Mono-crystalline/Poly-crystalline solar cells connected in series with two redundantly interconnected strings.

  • Cells laminated in ultra-violet stabilized polymer (EVA) and mounted behind a high transmission toughened glass surface.

  • Lamination process using Tedlar-Polyster- Tedlar, EVA, scrim and edge sealing of laminate by aluminum sealant tape having acrylic adhesive provides complete sealing against extreme temperature and weather conditions.

  • Anodized aluminum frame provides structural support for mounting.

  • Weather resistant junction box with terminals for output connections.

  • Manufactured to stringent quality specifications and tested to withstand adverse environmental conditions.

Photovoltaic Systems

BHEL has been successful in establishing SPV power plants on total turnkey basis at varied locations ranging from quite remote locations such as the Lakshadweep Islands, Sunderban area of West Bengal,  the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, etc. Metropolices like New Delhi, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram and Bangalore.

The appropriate concept-to-commissioning activities for each client is found and encompasses activities from detailed design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing and commissioning and extends to imparting training to system operators.

These systems have been put overcoming considerable logistical challenges and demanding site specificalities. For eg. The satisfactory establishment of these plants which were wholly carried out by BHEL, right from the Detailed Project Report preparation stage to the implementation-synchronization stage.

The following types of SPV power plants are available:

Major System components are:
  • PV array consisting of 80-240WP modules
  • PV modules confirm to National/International Standards
  • System voltage: 300V (Typical) or site specific
  • Power Conditioning Unit
  • Single/Three phase PWM controlled inverter for Grid interactive, Hybrid & Stand alone operation
  • IGBT based power circuit
  • Protected against overload, short circuit & Islanding conditions
  • Harmonic distortion <5%
  • Conversion efficiency >92%
  • Incorporates Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) to maximize PV array output
  • SCADA for remote monitoring
  • Remote start / Stop control for Diesel Generator for optimum load management
  • Multiple operation of all energy sources
  • Inverter parameters monitoring
  • Suitable battery bank design to meet system requirements
  • Employs state-of-art technology to ensure reliability.
Available in various capacities ranging from 25 kWP onwards.

Photovoltaic Cells

BHEL offers in its PV product range,  125  and 156 mm pseudo square high efficiency Mono/Multi-crystalline solar cells. 125 mm/156mm cells have become the solar cell component of choice for PV module manufacturers around the world.

Major features are:
  • Processed in modern and automated line using the latest state-of-the-art equipment
  • Higher power Solar Cells result in lower Module cost per watt. 100% performance testing of Cells
  • Resistant to breakage
  • Silver and Silver-Aluminium Metallisation on the front and back respectively for increased solderability
